MSN Messenger?!?
Hi, Just a quick question. Don’t know if it is possible or not!
I have messenger installed on my PC at work (it was on it when I started here) and am having some difficulties signing in.
Is the connections tab in options anything to do with it? I have the box checked saying I use a proxy server the HTTP proxy is selected from the drop down menu. It has port 80 in the port section. There is nothing in the server section.
When I try to sign in it says I’m not connected to the net. Is it anything to do with this server box? And if so is there anyway to find out what it is?
Or is it because I am behind a firewall?
Thanks
Claire

Your best bet is to do the following:
control panel >>> internet options >>> connections >>> lan settings
Check if a proxy server is specified in there and if so copy that info in to Messenger.

Claire. It's probably because you are behind a firewall and the ports for MSN are being blocked, thus preventing messenger from 'seeing' the server, and thus throwing a paddy and thinking it's not connected to the net.
From what I remember MSN uses ports 6891 - 6900 so you could always open them up and see if that helps.
If it still does not work, then it could be the proxy server settings, but you should only need to change those options if you do have a proxy server in place. As to what it should be set to? well, not sure, I don't have a proxy server, sorry.

Mark - I'm guessing from Claire's post she's not the sys admin so I dont think opening ports on the firewall is an option. If it is however, its port 1863 outbound you need for chat, 6891-6900 inbound for file transfer.
Re-read my post
