Unhappy Wireless LAN Signal strength

I've just splashed out on a Linksys WAG54G wireless adsl router modem to work with a wireless game adapter for the Xbox.

The downside is, the signal strength upstairs is okay for the laptop but Xbox Live is always losing the connection. When I line of sight of the gateway, Xbox live is fine and works okay.

Is there a way to improve the antenna on the wireless adapter for the Xbox. Its a WGA54G?

I've looked at the WSB24 signal booster but this is not campatible with the kit I've got.

Andy.

Unfortunately you are unable to upgrade the kit. The only trick you can do it trying changing the wireless channels. If that doesn't stabilise the wireless signal then your only option is to relocate your equipment within your home.

This is good advice, many things can interfere with wireless networking, digi senders, dect phones, microwaves etc. Changing channels can often work around these problems.

I too had similary problems. My AP is downstairs, PC with PCI wireless card upstairs (all Netgear products). Signal was dropping and often just drop connection. Searching around I found www.wirelesspro.co.uk. They sell higher gain aearials that fit onto Netgear equipment. So I got a bigger antenna for my PCI adaptor, just unscrew old one and screw new one on. Check whether you can take the antenna off first, I initially wanted a better antenna for my Netgear router but antenna can't be taken off. If in doubt email the guy at wirelesspro, I had good response from him.

(Antenna increased signal strength from average 60% to average 85%)

I've heard about the Pringles antenna idea. But of course making Pedigree Chum and Whiskas for a living I'd have to support my business and use a can.

Thanks for the help. I'll keep trying.

Whats your house made of?

We had a flint walled house & I struggled to get 25 ft, but in our new house (brick) there is no problem at all, great signal up or down stairs.
