Does anybody happen to know if there is the facility in windows 2000 to allow connections via the windows remote desktop program. I can find the client for win 2000 which will let the windows 2000 machine connect to the xp machine but not the other way round!

Nope. Before XP, it was Terminal Services and only available on W2K server. XP uses the same Terminal Services, but limits it to a single console connection.
You need to use something like VNC or pcAnywhere if you want to connect remotely to a W2K pro desktop

you can download remote desktop connection from microsoft here for legacy/downlevel win clients.. I use it across a mixed 2000/xp domain with no problems...
But my prefered remote controll program is either realVNC for LAN use (less secure unless bound to VPN) handy for multiple networks & domains, don't need to be a member of the same workgroup/domain, works across many different platforms java>win>linux etc & totally free, very thin & tiny program

also dameware is worth using if only for the NT utilites, very very handy & worth registering

Or use Subseven lol!
Give em a try mate
