Default upgrading Sky+ hard disk

Has anyone got any info on how to upgrade the harddisk inside a Sky+ box.

I'm sure someone mentioned you could do it, but there were strict guidelines for doing it.

I thought it was just a case of:
1) Open box
2) Install disc
3) Close box
4) Sky+ automagically reformats disc, away ya go
???

I've got a hard disk, but never got round to fitting it.

I think what Class_A says is true, however I think that you've also got to go into the service menu and do a full system reset at which point it then formats the HDD.

Be aware that there's the 137Gb limit in the kernel/IDE controller. You can buy a bigger disc, but only 137Gb will be available for formatting.

5400RPM drives are also preferred as they run cooler.

You do need to do a Full Reset as zhastaph says.

Have a look at this thread on DigitalSpy for success reports.

Cheers,
Alex

just wondering if it DYNAMICALLY calculates free space (the % you see above all your recording in the planner)

or does it base the free space on the size of hard disk that is fitted as standard to Sky+ boxes ?

eg. if I went ahead and fitted a 137Gb drive, will it correctly calculate the % free space ?

From what I've read the % is cocked up, but the bar graph is ok. I'm guessing the % still works based on a drive size of 40 gb.

slightly off topic - can you buy sky+ without having to pay for a donkey to plug it in ? i.e no installation charge ??

don't think so - they need to fit a new LMB (4 way satellite output) to your dish as well.

I got mine online and it only cost a quid.

If you're thinking about getting one it's well worth it, you will not regret it for a second.

Nah. I think that the data stream is written directly to the HDD as it is received through the dish. I'm in the understanding that the drives don't even have a file system that is understandable via a PC.

Yes you can fit it yourself. You just bolt on the quad LNB, plug them in and away you go.
