Question Explorer keeps using 100%cpu

My girlfriend's pc keeps going very slow, and when looking in task manager its clear that explorer is up to no good.

Everything is updated to the latest fixes (winxp). It also keeps using about 170mb ram

Hoping not to have to reformat it Anyone got any suggestions??

Cheers,
Andy

This is quite a common problem.
If you go into DISPLAY PROPERTIES then APPEARANCE then EFFECTS & uncheck the TRANSITION EFFECT box for menus, then is should sort itself out

Are you sure it is using 170mb of ram and not just cacheing it ?

If you count the mory on all tasks I bet its nothing like 170mb.

The best way to tell is to run msconfig from START button then Run.

Uncheck all startup and processes, reboot. If its still slow and using memory/resources - then sounds like a virus. If not switch services on one at a time until the error happens - this might point you in the right direction.

It does it for no reason after its been on a while. Nothing to do with rightclicking anything.

By ram i meant memory usage on that process.

I've got her to turn off the transition bullsh!t so we'll see how it goes.
