What hard disk - and RAID?
Hi,
Getting finally nearer to sorting out the build for a new PC. Looking at hard disks and the best deals look to be 160GB. That seems to be the sweet spot in terms of price anyway and it'll give me plenty of space to play with. But looking at which ones and it's a little less clear. The Samsung Spinpoint, Seagate Barrcuda, IBM/Hitachi and WEstern Digital are all about the same price (IDE disks that is).
Gonna get an ASUS A7N8X-E Delux Mb with RAID etc. So I have two questions:
a) anyone experience of the above disks to recommend them or not? I must admit that the Samsung seems a good bet as it has 3 years warranty and is quiet.
b) an option is to get two disks striped using the RAID on the MB. So the system disk would be 2x160GB striped. Anyone done this and would/ would not recommend it? If you have done it is it a lot/noticeably quicker than a single system disk with IDE?
Cheers
Dave

Think the 8MB cache Western Digital and Hitachi drives still come with three year warranties, and in those circumstances I'd go for the Hitachi or WD in preference. Would be worth looking at www.storagereview.com if you haven't already done so.

However, you should bear in mind that if one of the two drives fails, the data on the entire striped array will be lost, thus it's even more important than normal that you maintain a good backup regime.

CooperS: looking at various sites for the bits.
eg. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/
www.scan.co.uk etc etc plus Dabs and Simply.
Depends on the cheapest.
GM: yeah, I know I'll lose all if one disk goes if I stripe.
Thinking at the moment is just to have a 40MB WD disk for the OS and other SW and a RAID setup for data.
Cheers

There are now some S-ATA disks with TCQ, although in fairness this is a feature that makes itself more useful in a server environment than a high performance desktop.
As you say, USCSI is still the ultimate performance leader, but in terms of bang for buck and bang per capacity, modern ATA/S-ATA RAID implementations offer far more than a typical SCSI alternative.
