Default Having Pipex on Wednesday - a couple of questions......

As topic sez, got Pipex coming on Wednesday.

Here's what I'd like to do :-

I've got my XP Pro PC (this will be the main PC)
Also got an XBox, Apple Mac G4, and Powerbook (all with network cards)

I want to have the XBox connected for XBox connect (not Live ) - the PC has to have access to the XBox.
I want to have Powerbook able to access the Internet at the same time as the PC (if possible)
I also want to have the G4 connected so that I can upload/download stuff.

Now, my understanding is that I've got an ADSL modem that comes with Pipex. That on it's own isn't enough, I know, so I was going to get a hub, and run everything though that.

BUT, will I still be able to access the net off my Powerbook through the hub? Will I have to bite the bullet and buy an ADSL Router?

Thanks in advance,

Dan (also, can anybody recommend a Networking for Dummies book)

Hi Dan,

Easy solution: Chuck all you computers except one of the PCs in the bin. End of.

Not so easy solution: Yes, you are looking at getting an ADSL Router. By all accounts, fairly straightforward to set up. If all you gear can already talk to a LAN, then you are 80% of the way there.

As an aside, my PIPEX "arrives" on Thursday. All the gear itself (USB ADSL Modem and microfilters) arrived Friday and it is all setup ready to rock. Will be used on a single PC, hence the USB Modem on my "home" line

Once I've made sure it works OK (missus PC), I'll look at binning my "work" ISDN lines for ADSL, then I'll need an ADSL router as well.

Cheers

Ian

I've used the D-Link 604 for a few people, work well, easy to setup.

If you dont want wireless, eBuyer were doing their own brand 4 port ADSL router for sub £40 IIRC.

I've recently got a Linksys WAG54G from BroadBandBuyer.co.uk

ADSL Modem, Router, 4 x 10/100 Network Ports, 54Mbps 802.11g wireless, firewall etc

Superb value at a smidge under £100 ex VAT. Been very happy with it so far

Ian, did the Ebuyer one have an ADSL modem built in?

Chris, that one sounds great, but a bit too much for my first intro to networking

Any other recommendations before I get the EBuyer one?

Yes Dan, it had the ADSL modem built in, link is below

For the money I cant really fault it, my friend who is using it has not had any problems with it.
