Webcams - Stupid Question

We bought the Father in law a webcam recently. I don't have one but the question is how do you communicate with someone else so they can see pictures live so to speak?
The Creative instructions seem to completely miss this out. He wants to use it as a video phone type thing with friends in Australia which is why we got one with a microphone. I got it up and running but presumably need a programme.
Please Help

If you both have Windows XP, you will have XP Messenger with built in videoconferencing, file transfer, whiteboard facilty etc.
Just double click on it and sign in as new user with a valid e-mail address and then nominate the other user and he will be notified and you can then both tell if each other are online by the messenger icons status.
