Machine crashed whilst using dvd shrink. Now the partition that the dvd was being compressed to can no longer be viewed (drive letter is there but all data is missing). Machine is dual boot and when booting into windows 98 the drive can be explored and all files are there, even part of the dvd that was being compressed. Can anyone help with getting XP to see the drive properly again. Xp wants to reformat as NTFS was previously FAT32. Thanks

Sound like the FAT has been damaged and requires rebuilding. Have you got any disk doctor type programs e.g, norton diskdoctor - Run this in 98 then try rebooting in XP.

Will try that. The file ststem when the drive is viewed using XP says its RAW. Just to confirm the C=W98 D=XP E=bad drive F=Swapfile. From C I can access the files that are on E but when in XP I cannot view the files as the properties are now RAW on that disk. Was ok before the crash.

Ok so it's corrupted under Winxp. So the best n safest bet is in Win98 copy all the files to another disc (if u have the space) that is ok in XP. Then in XP format the bad disc in NTFS or FAT32, n copy all the files back on again. You were lucky it didn't corrupt the system boot disc. Why dvdshrink corrupted it in the 1st place is a mystery though, it shouldnt do that. Make sure you defrag those discs afterwards if successful, as you may have a problem with the drive that got corrupted.

Yup Bioforger great minds think alike just started the same process as you describe, lets hope it does the trick. Have tried ghosting back to previous XP to no avail, so guess it is somethin to do with the FAT. Will report back
