Default Worth Buying 8x DVD-Writer ?

I currenty use a Pioneer 4x DVD-R drive, reckon its worth upgrading to the 107 8x writer ? Or wait for dual layer burners ? Anyone know when they'll be on the scene ? 8x media is now readily available so that is no longer an issue.

I've just bought a 107. It's my first player and at £70, didn't see any point in saving a few more pennies on a x4.

Is the only benefit to you speed?? If I could say when the dual ones would be out, I may have waited (but only a month or so).

The only benefits to be are speed increase from 4x to 8x . . . and DVD+R capability (which I have no use/need for). Benq and Sony are supposed to be releasing dual layer burners Q2 2004, but no signs yet ?

Think I may sit it out for a while . . . . saying that the 8x would only cost me about £30 on top of what I can get for my current drive . . . hmmmm, may be worth it if only for resale value.

Go on!!....

You know you want to..........

I'm thinking along the lines of a 107......... myself

By the time the duals are out and the market has settled (price wise) and the price of media has settled, it'll be a few months down the line surely!!

Phil

....... as you've said.... you can always trade them on and pay the difference to upgrade!!!

taking the Pioneer 106 and 107 as a comparison:

The 106 is a 4x dvd+/- writer
The 107 is an 8x dvd+/- writer

The 106 is a 16x cd writer
The 107 is a 24x cd writer

The 106 and 107 are both now available for under £70!

The price difference between 4x and 8x media is substantial, however, hacked firmware for the 107 will allow 8x burning of 4x dvd-r

Although the drives are marketed as 8x writers, you won't get a 'true' 8x burn.

As a guide, a 4gb file will initialise, burn and finalise in 15mins in a 106
The same 4gb file will initialise, burn and finalise in 9mins in a 107

The 106 is a tried and tested, bulletproof machine whereas the 107 is still relatively new on the market but is future compatible as far as media is concerned.

What you need to ask yourself is do you need to burn a 4gb file 6 minutes faster?
In my opinion, it will be a similar situation to burning cds at 52x If it's audio/video you're backing up, you will have playback errors burning too quickly.

The Pioneer 108 is anticipated to be a 12x burner and the 109 will be dual-layer (expect blank media to cost approx £5 per disk)

Personally, i'm happy using a 106 and see no need to upgrade.
4x DVD-r media pricing will fall in-line with the current cd-r prices by the end of the year so i'm happy to stick with my 106

Cheers Paul. Good advice as ever.

I have the A05/105 (4x -R only) so I've decided that the upgade to burn +r media as well as 8x on 4x media is worth it for me. Only cost about £28 on top of the sale of my 105 so pretty good really

I've got the firmware to burn 8x on 4x media. Have you tested this Paul ? Whats the reliability like ? I was under the impression that a lot of players have problems with media burnt at speeds over 4x ?

Oh, and when's that damn website of yours going to be up ?

I bought the Pioneer 107 in the end - £68 inc VAT & delivery I'm sure the LG drive is very good, but the Pioneer drives are proven to be reliable and stable & I've had a few of them, whereas my mates LG is quite the opposite

Thumbs up

For DVDRW I've got the NEC2500A model, its brilliant. Multiformat 8X DVDR+/- write and good CDR write as well at 32X, and 40X CD/12X DVD read.

As an added measure I've also got a Samsung 352B CDRW/DVD combo drive. (52X/24X/52X/16X) for copying to the NEC or vice versa

Yes Dunk, the 107 with the hacked firmware doesn't have a problem burning GO4 at '8x'. However, when we further test the quality of the burn, the speed surve becomes a bit shaky after 4gb of data but still plays back without fault.

As ever though, the Pioneer drives are proving to be the least fussy about what disks they'll burn.

If you would like more details on our test results and a media recommendation, catch me on MSN.
