I have 2 PCs and a laptop on a network and have always been able to access shared files from each.
Now PC[2] and laptop cant access files from PC[1] although permissions are set.
PC[1] can access files on PC[2] and laptop. Also, PC[2] can access files on laptop and vice versa. PC[2] and laptop can both ping PC[1] ok.
I have obviously altered settings somewhere
Can anyone help as I am getting very annoyed now?

Permissions are set on the shared folder (i.e. the ability to connect to the share name itself) as well as the individual files and folders within the share.
Can you see the sharename?
Also, whatever username you are logged onto a PC as, it will use that name/password combination to pass to the remote machine for authentication. Check you haven't altered or changed usernames and passwords.

I did add passwords to PC[1} and laptop but have removed them now, but still cant get access from laptop to PC[1]. That's when probs started
when I allocated passwords.

What do you mean you added passwords? Do you mean you added user accounts?
When you connect from PC2, the username and password you are logged into on PC2 either must be defined as a valid user with permissions on PC1.
Same would go for laptop.
So, logged in as Joe on PC2, the name PC2\Joe would need to be defined as having permissions on both the sharename itself and the files/folders within the share.
PC1\Joe - tells us it's the username Joe on PC1
PC2\Joe - tells us it's the username Joe on PC2
Both are completely different user accounts and must be treated seperately. This is on XP/W2K with more advanced permission control than simple Win98/95.

XP Pro on the 2 PCs and XP Home on the laptop. I have sorted it to a degree, by dragging file/folders to My Shared Files Folder, which I have never had to do before and can now gain access.
I just used to do 'share this file/folder' and it would appear in Network Places.
