PC doesn't see cd/dvd drives - HELP!!
A GOOD friend has just telephoned me saying he is pulling his hair out....
He was merrily using his PC and both drives.......
Went away........ came back (in the space of no more than an hour) and the pc would not recognise either of his drives...?!?!?!?!?
He is by nomeans a teccie (end user only)
I've had a qick look:
* Explorer shows A & C only
* Running the hardware manager and scanning for new hardware finds nowt....
* On boot up it shows ide channels as None....
Tried restore and nowt..........
He knows they were working as he had just put some digital piccies onto cd...
To ALL you TEKKies............ any ideas??
I'd like to understand why this has happened.....
he did logg onto the net in between, but is running Norton AV... and is on dial up.....
I did notice that his pc's processor was running at approx 90% immediately after start up and for a long period of time after......... no just as everything 'loaded'..........
go on then.... someone MUST know the answer....... New motherboard??
Cheers in advance
Phil

fogot to say.........
pressing the open/clos buton works, so power is there!!
was thiking of swapping drives or disconnecting them in turn...... perhaps swapping them with mine to make sure they are 'live'....
I also have one of those USB caddy thing, so was gonna take one out and connect it back to the affect pc and see if it would recognise it via usb....

Strange...... but TRUE......
YES...... it was something to do wit the IDE cables......
But it makes NO sense.....
I thought to myself, that to identify if the cable is bust..... swap them, and if it don't boot then it the cable....... Agree.???
So, connected the cable from the HD to the cd/dvd rom drives and vice versa....
ALL booted up fine and xp found both drives........... spooky....
....
any suggestions???? dry joint??
