Default Is my HDD dying?

My 2 year old 60GB IBM Deskstar is making new noises! There's a constant slight whine which pulses (a bit like a twin propellor plane does), and when switching off it is much louder than it used to be while it spins to a stop.
It's not hugely noticable, I thought I had ringing in my ears from the club the night before the other day, but realised it was only when near my PC!
Is the drive about to expire then? How long do you reckon I have got? It seems to be performing as usual.
Cheers,
Ben

if your bios support S.M.A.R.T, turn that on. you can also goto http://www.storage.ibm.com/hddredirect.html?supcallbox to download the ibm hdd utility software to have the hdd checked out.

There are known problems with IBM deskstars (they are also known as deathstars)

It sounds like it is on its way out..

Yep my BIOS has a SMART option, it was enabled anyway, what do I do with it? I've tried downloading the drive health test thing too, but the file seems to have something missing as it wont run properly. I'll have another go with it.
Have ordered a Seagate ST3120026A 120GB for £62 so the IBM doesn't have to hold out much longer fortunately.
Cheers guys,
Ben
