Default PC optimum CPU temp

Hi,

Can anyone advise what they think the optimum running temperature should be on a AMD socket 7 based Shuttle machine. BIOS is set to 48 degrees for the fans to kick in. On average my machine harbours around the 45 degree mark.

Comments appreciated.

Is that under full load? Which fans will kick in? What's the case cooling like? Optimum temp for what exactly?

Hi, its not doing anything in particular. The CPU fan is the one that kicks in, I meant to say how hot can it go before I can expect to see some damage?

Expect normal running temps for the CPU to be around 48°C on idle, during the summer in a hot office. Depending on fans, the Northbridge could be a little warmer, system temp should be around 42°C in the same conditions. Under 100% load, CPU temps can rise up to 60°C in this hot weather. I wouldn't like to see the CPU get hotter than around 65°C under load. Any temps over that figure could result in the CPU lasting less time than you would hope. Temps can be arbitary as they depending on motherboard temp accuracy & whatever software you're using to check the temp. I use Speedfan & an MSI board. MSI boards can over-read. I'm also running hyperthreading which will make the chip hotter.
