Question Which PCI graphics card ??

Hi

I have a new PC and finally managed to get around to installing my old Creative Audigy card and had hoped to install my Hercules 3D Prophet II ti, it turns out that my lovely new Dell only has PCI slots, and the herc is an AGP card . Can anyone recomend a half decent PCI card for someone who plays the odd game every once in a while, the PC came with the standard Integrated Intel® Extreme Graphics, what should I be looking for??

Cheers

Dave

HI B2Zero

Mainly older games like Quake Team Arena, Fifa, Counter Strike, But now I have a better PC, P4 2.8 Ghz, 512K Mem, 80GB HDD, I was happy to install the old Herc, as above that cant happen due the card being AGP, two games that have caught my eye that wont be coming out on PS2, Doom 3 and Toca Race Driver 2.

I think I paid £120 for the Herc when it came out, I would probably expect to spend around the same amount, I don't really know to be honest because I'm sure technology has moved on and prices probably now reflect that, the old herc was 64mb, I would imagine I am going to be looking at a minimum of 128mb nowadays, maybe 256mb??.

Any advice greatfully received

Many Thanks

Dave

It's AGP though isn't it??

Dave as you are aware you are quite limited by not having a AGP slot. I have a 3d prophet 9000 64mb that is a good upgrade from your intergrated chipset. Yours for £35. I dont think that are that many more powerful cards available for the PCI interface although to be honest I haven't really looked around for one for sometime.

If its a new PC with no AGP slot - chances are the motherboard has an on-board AGP chipset. I doubt any addittional PCI card will be quicker than an on-board AGP.

If you give the model & make of PC or motherboard people can have a look and see if its worth replacing with a PCI card (or simply replace the motherboard for one with an AGP slot).

"But now I have a better PC, P4 2.8 Ghz, 512K Mem, 80GB HDD", i cant believe with the spec of that machine, that is does not have an AGP slot ?..

What is the make and model of the motheboard, even if it has on-board graphics, it should still have an AGP slot

Hi molko

It's a Dell, a variation of the Dimension 2400 series, sorry at work at the mo cant give u anymore details than that, I have had the side off and it only has three pci slots at the rear where you expect to plug in your graphics and sound cards.

I saw these ?? one is £37 the other £120 odd both are 128mb and both have nice write ups, but I really am not that clued up to know if one is substantially better than the other although there is £80 between them, i think maybe the latter.

May not be...

Think PCI express...

Faster than AGP... as AGP is only a PCI slot anyhows, just with a few tweaks... pCI express runs double tranfser bus up 24x i think... MMMMmmm could be one of these... if so then loomat the new ATI cards... plenty $$$ but supa quick..

hope this helps

whooaaa there funkii

before you do anything, tell us the make/model of your machine...

If your machine is new then theres a 99.9% chance that it will have an AGP slot, if not then you've been ripped off

PCI graphics cards are next to useless...

OK Computer details

Dell Dimension 2400 It probably hasnt got one because I only paid £448 in their recent promotion and that was with P4 2.8 ghz, 512mb memory, 80gb HDD and a 19" screen, not a bad price I thought(they wanted £748 for the same set up when my sister went to order the same model two weeks ago) , I didn't even consider it wouldn't have an AGP slot.

The manual also shows three PCI slots, I only realised this when my old AGP card didnt fit the slot and then reached for the manual, I've just had another look at the manual and there are no AGP slots on the System Board diagram, just the three PCI slots I'm affraid

Be careful of any supa dupa graphics card via normal PCI as I dont know if the bus supports enough throughput to be able to take advantage of the additional proccessing power of the graphics card. Cant believe that dell & co get away with selling such utter tosh. Suppose they put it on the cheapest of motherboards and get rid of their outdated processors. You end up with a good spec processor but you are unable to use for gaming as no support for a graphics card that can take advantage of the processor.

2400 has Integrated Intel® Extreme Graphics. Maybe worth a bell to Dell and see if they will swop it for a 4600 which has AGP?

Question

Sorry to hijack the thread, but instead of posting a similar new topic I'll just ask in here

I have a 2 year old Dell Dimension 4550, P4 2.66, 512MB RAM, 120GB, GeForce4 MX 420

Pretty sure I have a AGP slot?

Anyway I'm looking to upgrade the graphics card for something decent round the £100 mark or a bit more. Those links come in usefull B2Zero and that Connect3d ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB DDR DVI TV-Out Retail Box for £136.29 looks good vfm, however I'm pretty clueless but I thought the 9800 Pro was 256MB? Is it just a simple plug in the AGP slot when I get one? Would I have to upgrade anything else on my system?

Any help appreciated

Thanks in advance
