I have sent some simple excel documents from work to home via email. These have mysteriously turned into .dat files and are at the moment unreadable. Can anyone help a non computer person with what has gone on here?

This happens when the two email systems don't correctly convert the format of the message when transferring the message between them. Try resending the message with the attachments in Plain Text format; if that doesn't work get your work email administrator to specify the format when your work system communicates with your home email system.
