Question XP Service Pack 2 Download...........(not)

I clicked the AutoUpdate 'balloon' at the bottom right of my screen to get the SP2 update, but nothing happened.

The same with a friend's machine.

AutoUpdate is switched on, no sign of any activity i.e. downloading, and the machine has been on for hours over the last few days.

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on?

Mmmmmmmmm. Thanks RB5-Black.

I have forced a restart of the Auto Update (by turning off Auto Update and then turning it back on). This then gave me the Windows Update dialog box asking if I wanted to download SP2. I clicked on the Download button. The Windows Update icon in the taskbar then disappeared, and i do not get any %age count like RB5-Black appears to have. There is nothing to show that SP2 is downloading at all.

I have a broadband connection so it shouldn't take that long to download a 60Mb update (all other updates have been installed)?

Thanks Jack, but this doesn't give you the option to force download of SP2 - you are still reliant on it working via Windows Update?

If I search for available updates it only shows 3 (none of which I want) - SP2 is not listed. I don't think SP2 would show on that list.

If you've got it on auto update then it should do it at the time you have set for auto updates (standard 3 am unless you've changed it). I manually downloaded it last night, combined with a disk cleanup/defragmentation, and it took me just the 4 hours..... despite being on ADSL 2.3mbps at home.

Had a few false starts where nothing seemed to be happening as the menu box disappeared from the middle of the screen, but the little icon appeared bottom left and if you put the cursor over that it showed that it was downloading, just very slowly.

There is no update for XP Pro users yet. Only XP home on the Auto Update link.

I put sp2 on today. Luckily I set a restore point before installing it, because I couldn't get it off quick enough afterwards!!!

ive been testing this at work since its first beta editions and the final one is very reliable and ive rolled it out on my networks, only minor issues with some custome software used. I dont see a problem with it aslong as its implemented proply and you your pc/laptops and in good running order to start with.

I downloaded the stand alone from here too (think it was here), took about an hour and a half.

Mines is working fine on everything accept probably the most important stuff, which is my Nikon camera software, I can over-ride it manually, but it makes my life slighlty more annoying considering how many photographs I transfer!

Hopefully Nikon will offer a fix..

For some reason, last night both my pc and my friend's decided to start downloading SP2 via Automatic Updates, having ignored all efforts to get it for the last week.

I am glad to say that everything still seems to be working on both machines
