Its a cold cathode ring taken off of an 80mm PC case fan from overclockers here. It fits perfectly around the top aperture and is cheap too.
I basically removed the xbox jewel (heat with a hairdryer) from the top then dremeled out the hole.
Next, sanded off the green stuff from the jewel to make it clear using brasso. Its stuck back on with hot glue afterwards.
The cold cathode ring just connects up to the molex connector on the HDD, and I fitted an on/off switch just underneath the controllers ports

Next up, I have some 3 leg dual colour LED's (white/blue & red/blue) to replace the power/eject LEDs on the front. Also to be done are front HDD and LAN activity LED's

If its any consolation Dunk, yours looks better than the other pics you posted. They somehow have managed to make the Xbox even uglier.

I would like to do your mod on my Xbox though, it looks cool. You should put a kit together and flog it on ebay!

The bottom one is the Crystal XBox with some cathode tubes and a SmartXX chip with LCD display. Pretty cool cos it can display media info on whats currently playing through XBox Media Player, as well as loads more
A little over the top for my tastes, but impressive work nonetheless.
Mine looks pretty pants in comparison, but it was fun doing it
