Question Doom3 configuration

Hi

Still tweaking my settings to get Doom3 running ok.One thing puzzles me though - when i run the time demo sequence to measure performance i typically get quite different results without actually changing anything. Is this normal?Usually the first time i run it i will get say 25-30 fps then i run it again without changing anything and it jumps to say 35-40 fps!If i run it a third time it seems to level out performance-wise.Does it "learn" the level and retain some of it in fast memory?

Any ideas?

Machine spec-

XP2500 @ 2.43 ghz
512mb Hyper-X ram @440mhz
Radeon 9800 @ 400/390

think you are right about it retaining in the memory after the first go

i normally type
timedemo demo1 usecache

this helps make the first attempt close to the 2nd go

that is correct. if you check your HD light on the first pass of the demo then you will see it go into meltdown. second pass as has been said is now cached. that is wht 2nd and third runs produce significantly higher fps than 1st run.

cheers

Thanks for the replies

So presumabely the first run would be the most realistic result to use unless you keep playing the same part of the game?

no not the first run. doom3 benchmarks are taken from the second or third runs of the demos

if you stripped your main drive with raid 0 would the increase in frame rate be worth it?

If you only have two drives, you'd be better off installing Windows on one drive and your applications/games on the other.

@drEvil

nah m8 the 2x80gig in my machine are the smallest drives i have. i have another 4x160gig in my case so losing 80gig to a stripped drive wouldn't be that detrimental. i only have downloaded stuff on my D: drive, so backup what i want and strip the drive to raid 0. just asking incase anyone has done it to see if it is worth the hassle, not just for doom3 but in general as well.

cheers

Striping the filesystem won't "loose" 80GB, not unless you mirror as well.
Remember though that if you have a problem with either drive and you don't mirror or have very good backups, then it's curtains and a re-install :-(

Striping isn't going to help you with Doom3 though, your better off with a single very fast drive for the app (Doom3) and boot/swap on a primary (different) drive.
There are a few tweeks you can do to make it run a LOT better though.
For example, in your Doomconfig.cfg file make the following change:-
seta image_cacheMegs "256"

You might have to make it smaller than 256 (MB) if you don't have say a GB of memory. Do the above and make sure you have the latest drivers for your graphics card and I bet you will see a 20-40% increase in frame rates.

If your interested in my other settings for Doomconfig.cfg and autoexec.cfg I've pasted them below, but note I am playing with the ultra graphics settings and you might want to crank it down a bit depending on your card.

Doomconfig.cfg:-

thanks for the advice SS

I am happy with my 51.9 FPS but was just wondering if the RAID option would speed things up a wee bit more. Like you said i have doom3 on a SATA drive with very little else on it.

cheers
