Help with Peer to Peer wireless network

I have a laptop with a Netgear 54mb PCMCIA card, and a desktop with an ASUS 11mb wireless card. I have been trying to link them together using peer to peer so I can transfer files and share an internet connection through a dial up modem in the desktop. Desktop has XP Pro, Laptop XP Home. Both SP1.
I have done the following:
Set SSID on each card to be the same;
Turned off all encryption and security for now;
Set both cards to be in Adhoc mode;
Set the ip address of the desktop to 192.168.0.1;
Set the ip address of the laptop to 192.168.1.1;
Created user accounts on both machines with same username and password;
Ensured both machines are in the same workgroup.
I can detect the network and connect to it, both machines get a good signal at 11mbps but I cannot ping from one to the other.
I have tried running the network setup wizard but it doesn't fix things up.
I have also tried running the desktop card in Soft AP mode and again I can connect but can't ping.
I realise it would be easier with an access point or router but expect it should still work.
Can anyone help please.
Thanks
Ken

Cheers Steve.
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
Looks like I have incremented the wrong bit of the ip address, will change them later and give it another try.
If anyone can see anything else wrong with what I've done please tell me.
Thanks
Ken

Yes! So either change the subnet to 255.255.0.0 or as I said the IP addresses. That is definately why they cannot "ping" each other.
Steve.
