Default Ethernet probs for noob!!

Hi, I am looking to link my PC to my laptop and also to share the ADSL connection. I bought an ADSL Gateway (WAG54G), plugged it up but there seems to be something wrong with my ethernet connection - as in the PC doesn't seem to think it exists....I am pulling my hair out and not getting anywhere. I am using XP Home Edition.

Please help me peeps - I'm getting hassle off 'er in-doors...

Is the ethernet cable you are using a crossover cable? Just an idea although may be way off

As djuk has mentioned, if your ADSL router has only 1 ethernet port for your inside connection then you will need to used a cross-over cable unless the port supports MDI/MDIX. If the ADSL router has a built-in hub on the back then usually a straight-through cable works. If you are getting a link-up, but cannot connect to the router to configure it check the manual. You will either need to configure a static ip on your PC ethernet port in the same subnet as the router or enable DHCP which will allow your PC to pick up a private address from the router.

The router has four ports...
Not getting any link up at all - it's as though the port on the PC isn't connected properly...

mmm I presume I check that through control panel/system/hardware - it doesn't display at all there - could it be an OS error?

I have XP Pro available - worth installing it instead of Home Edition?

Doubt that it is the operating system at fault - more likely to be a hardware issue. Is the ethernet port built in or on a PCI card? If built in, check in the system bios for somewhere to enable it. If PCI, check (with power off) that the card is correctly seated in the slot.

Right, I've had a look inside the PC.

Ethernet port is definately part of the motherboard (MSI KT4 Ultra)

Had a long look in the Bios and can find nothing at all remotely like what I need...

Any more ideas?

It will normally be a Jumper on the motherboard that needs moving or a BIOS option to enable the onboard LAN.

so no network, ethernet entry in device manager? If not then try running add/remove hardware from control panel. May want a disk that should have come with the motherboard for the driver.... If its not in the list then theres no software installed for it...

James, I use these at work.
Use ordinary ethernet cable. When connected, you should have a corresponding light on front for port your connected to.
Look at destructions, do you get lights on router as per them.
Your PC network connection should be configured to pick up an IP address automatically.
If this is ok, see if your PC can see the the router.
go to start, run..type in cmd then hit enter. In the black box, type in
ping 192.169.1.1 then hit enter..you should get 4 replies
If you dont, chances are, prob with pc network card or configuration of it.

doh...just read the rest

Silly question have you tried connecting your pc straight to your laptop using a xover cable????

if so does it work?

if it does your not connecting to your router properly. (i did the same thing!!!)

i had a uplink port and then 5 other ports and i cant use uplink port with port 1 together! (crappy linksys)

i now connect pc to uplink (pc is main net connection)
and other machines to port 2/3/4 etc as stated i cant use port 1.

sorry if im being silly and butting in on someones thread.

jamesemt - you will always have someway of enabling/disabling an onboard ethernet device. As mentioned, on modern motherboards it is usually enabled within the BIOS settings - double check the BIOS settings.

Within device manager do you have any question marks displayed?

From a command / DOS prompt if you type ipconfig /all what is displayed?

That is normal for most routers. The uplink port is used to connect (cascade) another router/hub/switch. Some manufacturers do it the way Linksys do and provide a 5th port for uplink which shares with port 1, others only have four ports ans a switch ro swap port 1 between normal and uplink modes.

Jamesemt: Personally I wouldn't waste much time trying to find out why onboard lan isn't working and just install a PCI lan card - cheap as chips these days.
