Call of Duty/XP sp2 issues
Updated to XP pro with service pack 2 and now can't play Call of duty. I have reinstalled loads of times and applied the latest patches but to no avail.
Anyone got any idea? The usual cod sites don't seem to mention this problem.

Game starts and I select >New Game > Veteran
It then loads, the white bar scrolls along the bottom of the screen and the is comes up with ERROR.
couldn't register shell shock "pain" see console.
So I go to the console only to find.....
ERROR
couldn't load image 'gfx/misc/railcorethin_mono.tga' in shader railcore
error the following cvars were not specified in the file 'scripts/pain.shock'
cg_shock_volume_shellshock

Yes it is a legit copy, I have changed video cards recently but have loaded the latest drivers so don't assume that is the problem.
It gets even more weird though. Untlil I re-installed the last time whenever I clicked on my icon it woud start Combat Mission2 instead of cod. Even if I went into the directory itself and clicked on the codsp.exe it would start combat mission 2!
Oh, and Enemy Territory has changed itself to the fench version!!
I use zonealarm, adaware, spywareblaster and avg virus checker. The virus checker updates daily and is run every night at 9pm. I am reasonably safe its not a virus or something. Clean install of wondows xp on a brand new HD so nothing residual laying around there either. Paranoid - me?

i use xp pro and sp2 and call of duty runs fine, have you tried updating call of duty to version 1.4 . not saying that will work but its a start, also has it messed about with the direct x ???
but did you unistall the old drivers as that will cause issues

To be honest I didn't uninstall the drivers as I downloaded them from new when I replaced the hard drive, i did then change gfx card and updated the nvidia drivers. that has never been a problem before but what have I got to lose eh? I'll let you know.

its a geforce 4 Ti4200 128mb ram. Not exactly cutting edge but not in need of overclocking just yet!
I haven't tried the old card but trying everything else really. I swear it has to be sp2 related, my other games work fine which makes me think its not the gfx card.
Thanks for trying to help anyway.

I have a Gainward ti4200 card myself, but I haven't tried to with COD.
Are you using the latest drivers direct from NVidia or the update ones listed in the XP2 optionsal updates??

maybe worth uninstalling them and trying the ones off windowsupdate?
clutching at straws, but more than one thing's changed so unless you put the old card and drivers back or remove SP2 and try with new card + new drivers it's a bit of trial & error.
