Question photoshop help please

Hi,

Ok, i have some small icon images that i want to use in a visual basic application. My problem is that if i change the background in vb to anything other than white the white background in the image shows up and looks daft, i was wondering if/how it is possible to change the background of the image to transparent allowing me to change the background multiple times in vb and the icons still look nice.

Thanks in advance

What he says

Jpg's, should only be used for photos or images with gradients. Icons should always be exported as GIF's, with alpha transparency.
