Have any of you IT bods out there installed Sharepoint? I have been set a little task in looking into this and setting it up etc............. But have never seen/used it before!
Are there any good web sites etc which hold some useful information?
And I believe I am correct in saying that you have to have SQL and .NET installed too?
This will be setup on a Win 2003 server, any help/info much appreciated

for the latest sharepoint you need to install onto a 2003 server. SQL isn't required but proberbly better that the MSDE option.
Install is pretty much standard windows installer jobbie.

AFAIK you *can* deploy MSDE legally in fact you can get an MSDE deployment kit and MSDE is the core SQL Server engine less about half a dozen features but it is incredible that it still supports TransactSQL, views, triggers, DTS. The issue is the deployment of management tools, i.e. you would have to buy a SQL Server client licence to get the client tools (Query analyser and Enterprise manager) but if you are developing an app that talks to MSDE say using ADO then there are no licensing issues. Also there are third party management tools you could use in place of QA and EM too, its quite a gift from M$!
