All AMD chips have a slower clock speed, this doesn't mean they are slower though.

Might help if you tell us what you'll be using it for?
Also, what else will you put with it? Such as graphics card etc..
What budget are you looking at?

If you look on sites like www.anandtech.com for example, they have a CPU run down, shows the AMDs are far better for gaming for example.

At the end of the day, the AMD chips do alot of things well, but the P4 do specific tasks well - horses for courses I guess.

I found the AMD chips run far hotter than the Intels. Is this still the case?

Nope, the Intel current core (Prescott) seems to be a good subsitute for central heating currently!

The new AMD64 90nm (winchesters) run cooler than P4s it would seem.
As does my 130nm AMD64 thou.

You're better off getting a 939 board and a 3200 winchester. They're not much more than the above, and you'll be able to swap/overclock your processor a lot easier

As other said, go 939, MSI Neo2 or Asus A8V.
Also look at a better GFX card, you can get a 9700pro for circa 90 quid, or if you can afford it, a 6600GT (AGP) for 140 quid.
