just rented burnout 3,
and.............
what a cool game,
but what a cr@p driver i am
when you crash what is the point of the R1 button?
( i must admit with the crashes like that it make you rethink when you drive in reality)
i also loved midnight run2.

Are you talking crash time?
'cos it's damn useful in races - you can steer the car in crash time and have all sorts of fun smacking the other cars off the road (and get great bonuses doing so)

When the action slows down after you've crashed you're in "crash time" mode. Basically you have some control over which direction the car goes by steering it with the direction buttons/stick.
Useful if you know/can see that a car is heading towards you, you can steer your crashed car into it's path and make it crash picking up bonus points & boost.
It's also essential in the crash junction part of the game as you can steer towards the bonus icons/other cars after you have crashed.
