Default Nokia 6230... MMC upgrades

Hi,

Wanted to use my 6230 as an MP3 player but going to need a much larger MMC card. I was contemplating a 256MB as my local Nokia show recommends this size but I'm tempted which some of the larger capacity version on the market.

  • Has anyone upgraded theirs and to what sizes?
  • Have you experienced any problems?
  • What are the best brands to buy?
  • Do the new RS-MMC fit?
Feedback greatly appreciated

Cheers
Frank

Haven't swapped mine yet, but it's on the list for when I get round to it.

As it's not really something "mission critical", Id be tempted to just bang a cheap one into mine, so I'd not bother too much about brand.

Is RS-MMC not reduced size MMC, so I doubt it would fit.

I have just put a 256mb in mine.

No problems but I read somewhere early software versions had problems with big cards. I think bigger than 256mb though.
Got mine from ebuyer, viking hi speed I think. Cost about £18 with free shipping.
I believe the rs-mmc come with an adapter so that they will fit standard mmc slots, though they are no cheaper and therefore can't see the point in using them.

I've got 512 and it's fine.

I can't get it to use folders properly though - it seems that if MP3's are in folders it just plays 1 then stops - if they're in the root it plays throught them like you'd expect.

The video player is reasonable - it comes with software to create them, just remeber to change the size to unlimited when you create them.

upgraded to a 128mb Nokia card as this was the recommended largest size and I thought Nokia card in a Nokia phone would work fine.

Dam' thing doesn't work (and I have tried many times to get it going).

Mate bought and loaded a no-name brand 256mb card which works fine for him; put it in my phone and it works fine too.

Can't remember the card name, but look on expansys.com under Nokia 6230 and you'll get a good idea what works.

philc, have you tried formatting the card and/or re-naming it?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies!

What brand 512 is this by the way?

I was looking on ebay last night and you can pickup a 1GB card for around £60.

I've just had my firmware upgrade to '5.24' which was noly release a few days ago. New feature include the ability to read MP3 file from within folders!

Since the upgrade my MMC never allowed me to play MP3's in this way but once I re-formatted the card and copied the data back it now works!

Cheers

I bought a 256 when i got my phone last year which worked fine
Then a couple of weeks later i bought a 1gig card which can only be filled to about 600mb until it says some sort of error.
This is whilst using a card reader to transfer mp3's to it.

So maybee it can only read up to a certain amount of memory.
Your frimware version may be able to tho'

think I've tried everything - renaming the card, initialising it, loading direct from the computer (didn't work), setting up folders ..... you name it; even took it back to the Vodafone shop and got a replacement card - still no joy.

Closest I got to getting it going was loading one 5mb mp3 file - which it reported as being loaded as a 5mb file, but the phone only played the first 6 seconds then stopped.

The supplied 32mb card works fine.

The next thing is probably get a firmware upgrade; see if that makes a difference (or throw in the towel and buy a no-name card).

I've been looking for a card to go into my new 6230.

Tips I've read include formatting the card in a PC (Via a card reader)

Thislink shows to use a Playlist and thus read MP3s in sub folders.

is there a differet format to mp3 that are similar quality but are smaller in size that will play on the real player or a player that you can put on the phone?

Cool

Have a 1gb MMC in my 6230 and it works just fine

I bought it here www.mobymemory.com - have a look at their forums first to answer your concerns about the bigger cards. In particular the bits about formatting the card initially.

I went for the USB card reader too as I was getting fed up arsing about with BlueTooth.

hi mate, just bought a 512MB from there myself. Just trying to figure out the best way to convert all my MP3's to AAC as apparantly they offer better compression.

The 6230 can play AAC audio files as well as MP3s, but it might be a better idea to rip the MP3 at a lower bitrate so it doesn't take up as much memory. After all, the sound output from the phone isn't exactly hi-fi quality so a 96kbps MP3 will probably suffice.

I read AAC qualilty at a 192Kbps rate is undistinguishable from CD quality with higher compression rates that MP3.

you know what you could do as well make it mono as the quality on that phone itself is not the greatest can't relaly tell the difference and on the loudspeaker it will sound just the same. you can make a 5 meg file to about 1.9meg with http://www.download.com/ImTOO-Audio-...ml?tag=lst-0-4

p.s if anyone is gonna buy the 6230 know don't there are much better phones being released and not by nokia like the k700i's big brother which will have a mmc card add on.
