have an avi file approx 740mb in size

have the following options

dvdr
cdr

how can i get this file onto something that will play on a dvd player

tried dvd santa and got a disk with "mince"

I'm no expert but I've never seen a DVD player that play's AVI files. All the ones I've seen play MPEG's.

I've been trying to sort this at the moment as I have just got back from holiday and I look a few AVI files on my digital camera and was trying to get them to show on the DVD player as well.

I'm assuming that your avi file is a divx or xvid file. There are standalone players to playback these files, but your easiest option is to convert it to DVD.
