www Search
Hi,
I have just started a new business and want to list my simple homepage to as many search engines as possible.
Are there any free sites where you can register your details so that search engines are updated or do you always have to pay a specialist company to preform this for you ?
Any info appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

Hi Mate,
I'm a PPC and SEO specialist by trade (I have my own Internet marketing company and also contract to a New Media Agency) Personally, I'd never use the 'free' submission services for two simple reasons; firstly you'll be spammed to death for ever more and secondly, some search engines actually ban websites that they have found to be submitted in this way, particulary if the submission website has a previous bad reputation (I could name some website promotion companies whose clients are automatically banned by the big search engines because of the promotors underhand tactics...)
Your best best is to first submit to dmoz.com but there's a good chance you won't get listed at all and if you do it could be at least 6 months. However, if/when you do then DMOZ 'feed' most of the big search engines.
The next thing you'll need to do is to ensure your site is fairly well optimised; ensure you have meta tags in place, make sure your titles contain keywords, spread your keyword (in context) several times across free text on your homepage, make sure your inward links are text based, not graphics and ensure all images have an 'alt'. Doing this will not only enable a quicker listing but will help with your ranking also.
The one simple way of getting the search engines (particulary Google) to notice you quickly is by getting a website already listed to link to you. Next time they get 'indexed' or 'spidered' the crawler will follow their link to your site and will then index you. It's the surefire way of a quick submission and it's free. Once one major search engine has you listed it'll only be a matter of time until others do too.
PM me if you need any further advice, but I hope this helps?
