Default Dell Windows XP disc?

Looking to buy an unopened Windows XP with SP2 disc from Ebay which was originally provided with a new Dell machine. Is there any downside to this?

Nearly forgot, would you guys recommend XP home or XP pro?

Thanks

this will only work on a dell pc - if you plan on putting the pc on a network xp pro is the way to go

do you have a Dell machine?

I work in PC manufacturing and our recovery discs will only work with our machines.

Technically you cannot transfer ownership of oem copies of Windows. They are supposed to stay with the originating pc even if you sell the pc.

Its not a normal xp cd, its a restore cd.

Hi,

99% certain it will be an OEM copy whioch means it will only be legal on the original machine it was supplied with. OEM licences cannot be transferred to other machines (except in a few special cases)

Also, the Dell disks will only work on Dell PCs (it checks something in the Bios). If your computer isn't another Dell chances are it won't work anyway.

XP Home is fine if you're not doing anything complicated in terms of networking.

Cheers

Steve.

Thumbs up

I got an 'hp' one off ebay. says 'business desktops' on the CD and came with the COA sticker inc product key activation code. No problem with this on home built PC!

Cheers

Mick
