Default BT ADSL and a D-Link Router

H E L P

OK, the story is:

I have ADSL at home supplied by BT, they also kindly sent me a USB Speedtouch modem, wich worked a treat, problem was the cats and the kids were fascinated with the wire and I would be disconnected at whim. So I purchsed a D-Link router. I can connect to the router (192.168.1.1) and have set the various parameters supplied by BT..............I cannot browse the internet.
I can FTP (lightning fast) I can ping using IP or URL's.
I can run my cisco vpn software and browse once connected to work.

BUT I cannot browse the web without vpn.

My neighbour can connect to the web using my router and isp without even making a change to his pc or laptop, my desktop works fine on either my router of his, but my laptop will not connect to the WWW.

I am running XPSP2 and am using windows to manage my wireless connection.

I have deleted and reinstalled the TCP/IP stack.

Suggestions ?

Must be something up with your web browser then. Have you checked the proxy settings?

How queer!

Just got broadband at home and tried setting it up last night and getting a very similar problem! Im with prodigynet and using a Dlink604t router. Got all the settings right, router connects to the internet, I can admin the router from either a winxp lappy or mac powerbook but neither can actually browse the web, spent about 2 hours and still couldnt get it going.

Spoke to support this morning they just said make sure NAT is enabled and that I can ping their primary DNS which I am yet to try, I cant resolve any external names at all, it's very frustrating! I had the D-link running before with Zen ADSL and it took all of 3 minutes to get it working doh!

Yours does sound like a DNS problem, did they supply you with a primary and secondary DNS address you can enter?

On your machine typr ipconfig from the Command prompt. You should have a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 if you haven't you have a problem with DHCP or static config on the PC. You can also try ping www.yahoo.com to check if you machine is resolving names correctly. If not reset the router pressing the button on the back and then reprogram your ISP settings. Maybe someone before has messed around with firewall settings in the router.

Have you tried re-running the Internet Connection Wizard ? Is firmware on router up to date ? Re-set ADSL connection & router maybe ? Just a few suggestions !

Thumbs up Home now, after some serious 'googling'

I am now logged into scoobynet from home without going thru my vpn client.....................the answer...............

Knackered TCP/IP stack

Deleted the winsock and winsock2 flas from the registry and re-installed TCPIP for all my network connections, all now running smoothly.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions
