Question Ethernet only machine connecting to wireless network

Sounds daft I know but we have an old Mac G3 beige without airport support which we want to connect it to an existing wireless router.

Is there any reason why the Linksys game adapter wont do this job?
It seems to simply connect up to existing wireless routers and allow a games console to get online. I can't think of a good reason why it should only work with games consoles. Does anyone know if only certain ports are open on these things?

Netgear do an alternative...

Any thoughts?
Cheers,

I'm assuming that your query is regarding Macs and games consoles sharing the same netwoprk. If so, then yes, it works no probs. I've got a PC, XBox, PowerBook, G5 and G3 all on the same network, albeit a wired network. Not too sure about the wireless bit, but I've also dug out my old beige G3, and hooked it up to my network - but via Cat5.

The G3's running OS9.1 - went into TCP/IP and set the address to my router's. Made sure that it's set to DHCP.
Clicked on IE and it worked first time

It does work, but not too sure about the wireless bit.

Dan,
I am trying to use the linksys game adapter to give the beige g3 access to the wireless network. No games consoles involved here at all.
The linksys has an ethernet port so my theory is that the g3 should be fine.
I was just wondering if the linksys was made to only allow traffic over certain ports.

Can you try hooking up the g3 through the game adapter using the ethernet port and let me know if it works

Thanks,
Rich

ahh - I understand. Sorry!!

By rights, it *should* work - I can't actually test it, as I don't have a linksys - mine's a cable'd up room

FWIW, your reasoning is sound (not trying to teach granny to suck eggs!)

From looking at the manual. it seems like it's "wireless connection for idiots" - a good thing. You just assign it an IP and off you go.......
