Default New Laptop

These two seem to be the most games/dvd friendly ones my work will let me choose. Which is the best? I'm not too sure on comparitive processor / graphics card specs these days... Both are the widescreen versions.. Is 1GB of RAM a necessity these days?

Hi mate,

First of all, if you want a laptop -particularly one that will handle multimedia and games- there are better deals to be had than HP. Go to Mesh, Evesham, DJP, Dell (to name but a few) and see what they have to offer. IGb of Ram isn't a necessity just yet, I'd say the minimum you should go for now is 512MB However, you should get as much as you can afford, as it makes a big difference to system performance and doesn't get obsolete nearly as quickly as the processor. If you're wanting to run Multimedia and games, you'll also need one with a good graphics card (regardless of how good your other spec is), look for the ATi Radeon 9700 for example.....Actually, I think the most recent series is now called the Radeon X300 or X600. Anything from GeForce will probably suit very nicely too.

HP are perfectly good, just that IMHO there are better deals out there, buying a PC is about getting the most clout for your wonga!! :-)

Thanks for that. Think I'm stuck with HP/Compaq at our place though as we have an exclusive deal with them. Graphics wise these two both seem to have decent cards onboard..not sure which is the most powerful though..

I have the NX9110 with 1250(ish!)Mb RAM - the RAM is SHARED with the Video card, so get as much as you can and allocate 256 to Video.

Mine has a 3.2GHz Intel processor and the ATI Mobility 9000 - it ain't great for games.

The NX9110 is fooking huge btw, more like a mobile p.c. than a bloody laptop! (you need a BIG lap)

Cheers Kieran. Sounds a bit hefty! I think the other HP model looks a bit lighter, although the footprint is similar. Looks more expensive too for lesser performance but as my work is paying I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep over that!
