Question iPAQ Bluetooth GPS....reliable?

After driving round Reading's awful 1 way system several times today I've decided I need Sat-Nav

I have an iPAQ5550 that I was thinking of running TomTom3 on with a Bluetooth GPS unit, wondered if anyones got any experience with this set-up.

My concern is the seemingly buggy Bluetooth operation on the iPAQ, it's running the latest firmware and drivers, just that when Bluetoothing tween my phone it often hangs needing a soft reset.

Worth getting a GPS unit and running it on my iPAQ or better to get a dedicated system like the GO?

Thanks in advance.

Tom Tom Navigator 3 does have a few issues with Bluetooth GPS receivers, to do with the Tom Tom GPS program that gets installed with Navigator.
What happens is it takes over the bluetooth connection so you can't use other bluetooth functions while its running. There is a workaround though.

Goto www.pocketgps.co.uk for more information.

I use it on my XDA II w/o any problem. My best advice to you is to go to http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/modules.p...=viewforum&f=6

All the info you will ever need can be found on the forums. Post a question and some very knowledgeable guys will advise you.

Hi John!

I think its supposed to be ok, there was an issue with bluetooth on the 2210 Ipaq which Tom Tome released an update for. Not aware of any major troubles since.

I have a 2210, though don't use bluetooth, my kit came hard coded, but that works fine also. IMHO I don't think its worth getting Go if you already have an Ipaq.

I'm sure you already know, and as mentioned above, but www.pocketgps.co.uk is a great place for info on such things

Cheers
Neil

I've posted before that I would not go the BT route again. I have 5550 and TT3BT, but it's a PITA.
Main gripes:
If you stop somewhere, put the ipaq away as your leaving the car, getting the BT to re-connect requires a restart of the app on many occasions.
Battery life is only 4-5 hours, charging is available from the TT car mount but I've got an Arkon so have a lash of cables to keep the thing charged.

Thanks, I take it this works with TT3 ok then?

What's it do in terms of life on the iPAQ battery?

Works fine with 3. Mine is powered from the cig lighter in the car. Out of the car it has helped to find where I parked in Gillingham for a footy match and has taken me from a tube station in London on foot direct to postcode about a mile away without doing much to the battery.

I'm a bit out of speed on mobile technology, my 5550 unit don't have a compact flash card...it's SD

Spose I need a CF jacket?

You can get SD GPS receivers but I have no experience of them. You would need to have one which has memory as well, but a bit restrictive if you want to add maps later.

Never had a problem with my iPaq 4150 and Bluetooth....i think it was mainly the iPaq 2210.

TomTom 5 will be out soon though - might be worth waiting. GPS BT supposed to last longer on one charge too!
