Question Format C: drive Help!!

Hi, my brother has decided to try and get the computer running quicker again by doing a complete format on drive C.

Problem is he can't format it. We were running Windows 2000. He then installed XP thinking it would delete everything and then he could re-install 2000 again. It didn't quite work as the computer will not install an older running system.

So guys how can I do a complete format on drive C: to get rid of XP and then start fresh with Win 2000?

Any help appreciated.
Please bear in mind i'm not too good with computers but can follow instructions!

Boot from the W2K disk, opt for install, when it asks about dick partitions, delete the partition, then make a new one, let it format it as NTFS, then it'll carry on with the installation.

Short & sweet. Hope it helps.

John.

John, thanks for the tips, It's a cd i'm running from so will this make any difference?
I started it up with win2K in the drive but it still throws up the message saying it won't install an older running system. After that I can't click install.

baffled!

heheheh You know I'm just kidding.

Do you have a windows 98 or an XP machine somewhere? If so then create a boot/startup disk.

boot the machine up, go into the BIOS settings and put the floppy disk to be the first boot device. Pop the floppy in and boot from it.

You'll boot into DOS, at which point you can just hit Format C: and format the C: drive. Job done.

The W2K installer is obviously just being far to damn smart, which is odd, as it should allow you to totally trash any installs on the machine.

ooh, handy site! Thanks Mick.

As for creating one on a machine, umm, it's been a while, searching in Help for 'boot disk' might throw up where the option is.
