Just bought a new laptop one pixel is missing off the screen, PC World say that there must be at least 10 missing to offer a refund.
Is this true or not??
Surely if its new and faulty it should be fixed under warranty.
Anybody know anything about this??

Some laptops can have up to 5 dead pixels before they replace (normally says how many in warranty manual)..So 1 dead pixel isnt returnable normally, but i guess if you ask for a replacement instead of a refund you might have more luck that way.

Sounds right to me.
LCD monitor were prone to dead pixels in the yearly years as well. You could take it up with their head office (or even with the manufacturer) but I would not hodl your hopes up.
Could you not just return it in full for a refund. You normally have 14 days return with most goods? Sales of goods act or something (but don't quote me)

Every pixel on the screen is controlled by its own transister. Assuming a resolution of 1024 x 768 that is 786,432 transisters! That is a lot of components to have a 100% reliability rate which is why most LCD screens will have a dead/lazy pixel somewhere. My apple G3 laptop has a sticky pixel and a dead one and this 19" TFT I'm looking at right now has a dead one. That said on the 19" its soooooo small that I actually have to go looking for it when I want to show someone it.
In short, put up with it mate as 1 dead pixel is more than acceptable to live with. In fairness, if the warranty said 10 and I had more than 6 dead pixels then I'd be arguing but 1 or 2 I feel you have to accept.

This refers to TFT standalone screens, but as that is what is in your laptop I expect similar rules apply. All but the cheapest nasty screens are in Class 2.

Im afraid that you are not able to force PCSC to repair this as it is well within tolerance. PCWorld actually applies a far less strict standard than is required. Its unusual for a store to offer to do anything in this circumstance (although CS will; if you speak to one of the minority of staff who come from a technical background and grasp the issue); in my opinion you cant fault them.
Its a good job that you arent quoting Darren btw as your statutory rights do not provide for a 14 day evaluation period; although retailers may offer one if they choose.
