OK.
Want to experiment setting up an online forum for a community idea I have. Obviously Scoobynet uses vBulletin, but looks like it costs money.
I want to trial a forum on my own spare PC at home running as a webserver before committing to paid webspace/webserver etc.
So..questions :
1) Which forum s/w
2) Is linux the way to go, or can I trial one running on XP? Don't have a PC setup for linux right now, hence wanting to try one on XP.
3) Any good places on web I should be looking for info on this?

Why not try InvisionFree to start off with. It's free and so you can cut your teeth on the forum thing.
If you really want your own forum then phpbb is pretty good. I am pretty sure it'll run under XP, you'll probably need SQL installed as well, to handle the database side of things, and I'd also install myphpAdmin to allow you to easilly add and edit backend database, for example, add in mods (basically plug-ins for different functionality)
I don't host my own site, but the ISP (Titan Internet) supported SQL, so they created me a database and then I simply uploaded phpbb and myphpadmin and it worked, well, after some tinkering

This thread got me thinking about phpbb, so I decided to see how easy it'd be to get it up and running on my iBook. The answer? Pretty easy.
I downloaded php, mysql, phpbb and webmin (thought I'd try that instead of myphpadmin, or whatever it's called)
I think that PHP was already on the system (OS X 10.4) but I installed it anyway.
The hard bit was getting webmin to create a new database. I did a bit of searching on the net on how to manually create db's and once I'd setup the accounts correctly, it worked great.
If I did not muck around with the accounts, it'd still be working, lol
