Thumbs up Restoring from 1998

Have a big job on at the mo, loads(200+) of DDS3 tapes from 98-03, need to be restored, some are working some are shagged. Main thing is that we restore an exchange 5.5 enviroment.

The pisser being that its from 98, no-one knows (old school have all left) the correct domain name or any of the Exchange Admin accounts or passwords!

If we can locate the SAM from the old NT domain, we are going to need a cracker to get these accounts. As i have never run one before, do you know of one that really works well and what kind of times am a looking at for it to run, ie size of SAM, to time it takes to crack and report ?

Any Ideas?

If it was that simple, i wouldnt have posted the question.

Different domain, different location, system changes and deletion of folder structure, the information required is between 98-2003 ! all of this does not exist in the company's current enviroment.

you'd think we would have though of that eh!

What software was Exchange backed up with? Do you really need to recreate the domain in order to recover the messages?

Again, another problemo, no-one knows, currently using arcserve to scan and merge where it lets us.

Deffo wasnt windows backup.

Sorry, worded the above slightly wrong, we dont need the same domain for exc5.5, just need the exchange accounts and passwords, other wise the mailboxes wont restore.
We have built w2k server(DC), installed ex2k in the hope (apparently this should work) to restore the db file to this, using ex2k to mount the db to, but we need the top level exchange accounts with which the old 5.5 was running, this bit we dont have/know.
