It's certainly technically possible (the hardware can do it easily with little or no changes to the software itself).

I've heard the same rumour, but I'm not sure they'll go ahead and do it as the pr backlash might be a little painful for them...

That would be a dumb move which I doubt UK retailers would be happy with. A large percentage of profits come from games rather than machines. Why lose out just because some people bought imports. If it's true then who cares, games will be cheaper on US import anyhow, all you lose is a little convenience.

On the other hand it forces uk owners to buy uk games rather than importing them from the usa, and thus helping improve uk retailer profits. There's two sides to every coin.

The PS2 is region coded like this, and I don't recall it having hurt the games retailers too much....

I see your point Iain, but I'm speaking about the retailers who have already forecasted using existing information, I'm sure the numbers would take a fall if they brought in UK region encoding. Especially when other handhelds have none.

Possibly, but I doubt it would make a huge difference in the great scheme of things. Most people buying games / consoles just go to the local shop of their choice for the stuff. It tends to be a very small minority that import games / consoles from abroad. It'll just annoy the people who have already imported the console etc before launch...
