About to add 512mb DDR 400mhz to a mates computer, which has 4 RAM slots. 1 + 2 both have 128mb of DDR 400mhz already onboard. Is it as simple as clipping the new stick into slot 3 and switching the PC on??

It will only fit one way round as there is a notch off center to help you fit it correctly.
Assuming it's an older PC and not using duel channel should be completely fine.
1) look at the mem slot, you'll see two clips, one at each end, press them outwards/downwards
2) Line up the mem module using the notch to make sure it's the right way round.
3) place ram into slot a push firmly (but not too hard) stright down at either end, you'll feel it slide in and the clips on each end will raise up to lock it in place.

Will it work? well it should do unless youve got a a very picky motherdoard.
The only problem you may find is if its a dual channel board that wont work in dual and single channel at the same time. Which you will be trying to make it do with a nice pair of 128Mb's and a single 512Mb.
Only way round this if indeed you do get a problem is to buy another matching 512Mb and put that in with the 512Mb you have, or put the 512Mb in on its own and run it in single channel mode (if thats an option), but youll obviously lose out on the 2x128mb modules then too.
