Default Undeleting completely deleted files

in over a decade of using computers, I have never managed to experience this before firsthand, and it certainly wasn't my fault today either.

was about to Burn 2.5gb of data onto a dvd, drag selected the files, and they instantly deleted. no idea how, suspect it was a stuck key or something ridiculous like that.

anyway, it's a new laptop, and I hadn't changed all parameters and so the recycle bin is ridiculously small so I have 'permanently' lost much of the files.

of course, I know that in reality they are still on the hard drive somewhere.

anybody know how to restore them or recommend any cheap or freeware programs (or have any 'free licenses' for commercial programs lol)

any help would be most grateful
