Default Card reader conundrum

Bought a USB 2 PCI card and USB 2 card reader, USB 2 card appears to be working fine, devices plugged into it work OK.

The card reader on the other hand although recognised by the OS and although it shows in Disk Management it's not being assigned any drive letters and if I try and manually assign a drive letter it tells me the partition isn't active and to reboot, if I do it's not even visible in Disk Management anymore.

This is driving me mental now I just can't figure out what is going on , somebody please help me!

Running Win2k on SP4 with all updates installed.

TIA

Are you trying a drive letter with a card plugged in or just the reader itself. I only ever get a drive letter when I insert my compact flash/mmc etc.

Trying it with just the reader as Windows is supposed to assign each slot on the reader a letter as soon as you plug it in, well at least it does on some other Win 2K machines and XP machines I've tried.

As you say I can assign a letter once there is a card in it but you have to go in and manually do it which you shouldn't have to and it's a pain in the a***

Just a thought... have you tried plugging the reader in with card already in the reader?

John.
