Default Windows 2000 Server blank screen

Hmmm - strange one this, we have got a customer who's monitor displays a green screen and a mouse cursor, but no other windows (log-on prompt etc). We can terminal service to the machine and log in fine, and all server-side apps are running fine.
We have replaced the video card, and disabled the on-board one, but still get the same problem!

Any ideas on what this could be?

To add - the screen is fine when in safe mode, and the machine also displays when POST (up until windows log-in screen)

I had this on a 2003 server and it was fine after I re-seated all the RAM and VGA card.

It's not done it since.

I would have hoped the engineer tried that when he replaced the video card - Oh well, looks like muggings has gotta go there to sort it out (hopefully - although if not, what are the chances of them being happy with starting in VGA mode all the time )

Apart from reseating the ram n vidcard it could be a vidcard driver problem, so reinstall the drivers to be sure.

what happens when they reboot it?

Does it come up with the GINA screen / dialog at all?

If you do cntrl + alt + delete can you get the dialog box?

Its not a fookin video card problem!

The ******* have lost DSL connection (ISP problem) so I can't do anything remotely now! Oh well - nice journey on Monday morning!
Looks like a problem with going above VGA mode (i believe Windows has 2 modes), half expecting to get there and find it is just a refresh rate, or the engineering company havent disabled the on-board card from BIOS or summat! Oh well, need the mileage money!

safemode does vga mode,

if you do f8 at boot there is an option for enable vga mode, or you can edit the boot.ini and add /basevideo on to the end.

If I get stuck, and can't solve it, I will put the /basevideo switch in - many thanks for your help!
