Default DVD camcorder - editing?

Hi all,

Need some advice. Ive been using a new Sony DVD camcorder that we have at work. I want to know how i can edit the dvd footage on my pc, the aim is to film multiple footage on various 8mm dvds and add the required clips to one normal sized DVD.

Do i need to buy any special software?

Cheers in advance

Movie maker will do the trick (built into XP), however, check what the connection is, most cameras are DV-out (Firewire). Unless your PC has firewire (Macs have it as standard ), you'll have to buy one - about £20 from PC world (they do a package - very good too)

Some cameras have USB, but ensure that it's a USB 2.0 connection, otherwaie it will be dog-slow

Then of course, you'll need a DVD writer in the PC

I have another older style tape digi cam of my own which i also need to get onto pc and editi it, i tried with movie maker but it couldnt find a connection when i plugged the camera into the usb....?

Any ideas.

If its a Sony DVD camera then its probably Firewire.

A good application for capturing from camera and editing is Pinnacle Studio, it's also good for exporting to a DVD

I have recently purchased a miniDV Sony cam and found that in the menu settings you have to change one that says connections from USB to USB streaming - only then will Windows Movie Maker see the camera and allow the footage to be saved to your hard drive. Mine also has DV-out but this is separate. Basically, you need to trawl through the menus until you find the one for USB - this turns it on!
