Chaps,
If you're considering an upgrade on socket A, get in there quick, most places have stock at the moment, but apparently AMD has officially END OF LIFE'd the products.
No doubt some etailers will cash in by upping the cost of the units they have left!
Happy hunting, Alex

As _Meridian_ said, DDR ram will most likely work on a new motherboard, but you'll probably want to upgrade to a dual channel kit @ DDR400 (if you haven't got that already) when you got AMD64 ![Wink](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
You should be able to get 754/939 boards with AGP slots for a while longer

Wouldnt bother with a sk 754 board as these are being phased out as well. Much better to go for the sk 939. 64 bit Semprons are ok at the mo on the sk 939 only diff between them and their big bro is cache size and price.
If anyone wants to take a socket a Asus A7N deluxe nforce 2 mobo (with soundstorm) of my hands and an XP2500 (clocked to XP3200 stable with normal cooling) then pm me

You could argue at this point you may as well wait for skt M2, as its only a few months away.

There is sod all point upgrading at the moment.
64bit OS is not ready & compatable with all hardware (as yet).
If you are looking for a cheap upgrade, you'll be able to get a XP3000 (ish) with 1gig 400FSB DDR memory & compatable MOBO (with SATA, Sound LAN ETC) for about 180 notes.
the 64bit chips are still in their infancy and wil continue to change on a regurlar basis.
When XP64 (longhorn?) has support for most hardware, more people will be upgrading - and prices will start to fall.
- same applies to PCI-E graphics cards - economies of scale & competition will force prices lower.
I'm waiting till after Jan '06 before i even think about upgrading my mobo /cpu / ram
(xp3000 barton, 2gig DDR400, Abit NF7-S, Nvidia 6800 non-pro)

I know it maybe dependant on the mobo, but does any1 know what the fastest amd64 cpu is u can install on skt754?
AMD's Athlon 64 is the latest evolution in the desktop computer industry. With its revolutionary 64bit architecture this CPU is fully compatible with future 64 bit operating systems and offers blistering performance in current 32 bit applications. With AMD's new HyperTransport technology and a massive 1mb L2 cache. This CPU's clock speed is 2400MHz.

Jan'06 is a good time to wait until, especially on the AMD side of things, as they have a number of new CPUs due out Q1'06, which as you say will force down the prices of the current ones.
GPU wise, ATi are due to release their new stuff end of Sept/early Oct, this will force some price wars (a little) between them and Nvidia. Although Nvidia are rumoured to have a higher spec version of the 7800 in the wings.
M2 is AMD's new socket and these are due early next year, although 939 chips are still in the line up and are of equal spec at present. M2 uses DDR2 as well.
As for Longhorn - it will be interesting to see 'when' this is finally released and what the minimum requirements will be.

As will the X2 series over the next 6 months, reckon end of Q1, early Q2, the 4800 will be at an (more) affordable price (ie not FX prices)!
