MAC s/w auto-updates via www
Do they always break the system?
I've just tried using the s/w update tool - download all the latest updates etc..
Now the MAC won't boot - just gets to the bit just before the user icons appear and a window comes up saying 'you need to restart you MAC..blah blah'...

Never had a problem myself.
Is there a PC in room, trying getting rid of that
Have you tried shutting it down completely and then booting rather than a reboot.
What Mac is it and what os is it now (or should it be)?
You could try the cure of all evil (*snigger*) and try holding down CMD+ALT+P+R to zap the pram (it might be cmd+shift - i can never remember) You hold it down when you boot, you should keep holding it down until you hear the second chime then release.

Alex, if you can, download the 10.4.6 Combo updater and run that over your system, then see if all is well.
I'be updated my Core Duo iMac and it went ok and that was using software update.
I'm also updating my G4 Tower, G4 Server, G3 iMac and iBook to 10.4.6 using the combo updater, so will report back if I encoutner any issues.

my G4 powerbook is now 10.4.6 and fine, two reboots on PPC machines is normal though if anyone gets worried about that.
Thanks for the stuff on the mini though as the new one should be here soon

Alex,
Just had one of the dev team say his machine crashed whilst updating to 10.4.6, so you're not alone. He's gone to try the combo updater, will let you know what happens.

Report back from the chap that after applying combo updater, all is well. Looks like that's the way to go.
Macfixit.com does have some good hints on the front page about what to do if you do have problems updating.

Alex,
Can't help with the ******* that is a wireless keyboard, but this info from macosxhints.com might help with the reinstall of 10.4.6
"Don't forget that if you downloaded the combo updater, you may even be able to successfully eject from the hozed install situation. Reboot off your CD, diskutil the disk back to health, then (hopefully!) reboot into single user. If you make it into single user mode, you can probably just cd ~/Desktop (or where ever you left the disk image of the updater) and then use hdiutil to mount it. Then run installer -pkg /Volumes/Updater-Name/Package-Name.pkg -target /. Since the combo updater writes complete apps, it will probably overwrite the damaged versions from the initial unsuccessful attempt with clean versions.
Had to do this routine with 10.4.4 to escape from starting the update with an (apparently) bad directory."

Markus - thanks for all your help mate.
I bought the MAC OSX Tiger Edition 'Missing Manual' - they aren't wrong there is a lot of stuff that should be in the user manual - like how to boot CDROM or single user for a start!
Still to no avail though - my kernel was ****ed - so reinstalled tonight.
Will try the COMBO patch now...

Right MAC OSX 10.4.6 Combo for Intel is being downloaded from the webpage...
Scratch that... just intel, not combo intel - I'm on 10.4.5 already...

Alex,
I would strongly recommend you download the combo updater and not the delta (standalone) one, even though you are on 10.4.5 already. As it contains all the updates needed from 10.4.0 to 10.4.6 it will contain more than the delta, and from what I've read, and don't ask me why, applying the combo where the delta failed will work miracles.
Hope it all goes well regardless.

Well, I've found the problem - airport device is flakey at best with my Netgear router - reckon that didn't help.
Anyhow - I've used the delta - all ok - I've updated frontrow - all ok and updated itunes - all ok...
10.4.6 seems more stable the .5... phew
Thanks for all the help - I'm reading my book now... Might take it to Redhat HQ tomorrow to fill in the dull bits of the course..

Excellent news! Glad it's working for you. I don't think 10.4.6 is perfect, had an issue whereby it won't wake from password protected screensave. Could be something running in the backround, but am sure nothing was.
