Just looked at a dell lappy for the other half

the intention is to run a wirless connection to my office pc and then onto the web...

according to dell,s blurb, wirless isnt compatible with usb broadband modems...

Uh Oh... how do i get round this???

do i have to change both set ups, office pc and lappy?? or do i have to cable the lappy to the pc upstairs??

Wireless Router.
Connect PC to one of the 4 port LAN ports on the back of the wireless router and then use the wrieless feature to connect to the lappy. Best type of wireless router would be one with a built in ADSL (Broadband) MODEM. So that you can share the internet connection.

Dell say this because I expect they do not supply or support ADSL Wireless routers that also have a usb connection on them. The reason may be, that there are not many devices out there that incorporate the usb feature.

either
1) ditch the usb adsl modem, and buy an adsl wireless router.
2) ditch the usb adsl modem and find/buy an adsl wireless router with usb
3) buy a wireless router, and connect it to your network ( ethernet RJ45)
port on your pc if you have one. Then connect lappy wirelessly.

If u choose
1) This would be my first choice, as all necessary configuration held within
the router. No software installation required on any pc's connected to it.
Depending on physical location of the router to main pc, I would connect
the router "wired" from one of its network ports to pc network port.
then wireless the lappy.
There are good reasons for wired,
a) the internet connection is quicker
b) it is more stable
c) if the wireless drops connection, and u need access to the router to
have a look-see, ur gonna need it wired anyway.

2) This is a bit of a hybrid, which is why there are not many routers out
there with usb. Attach router to pc with usb, then wireless lappy.

3) I would not go this route ever. This is being overcomplicated for the sake
of a few quid. Here you are talking about the old internet connection
sharing. The main pc has to be on all the time etc. If you want to go this
way fine.

Mart
If option 1, you will have to set router up initially (obv). with probably only very minor config on main pc and lappy ( to connect wirelessly to router)

option 2, similar config to 1

option 3, configure main pc for internet connection sharing (ICS), configure wireless router, configure your main pc to connect to router, configure laptop to connect to router.
