As above. My xbox harddrive failed at the weekend. It just clunks like mad and then tells me to ring MS Support with error 07.

I have a spare drive (15GB) but don't think I can use it without a modchip - is that correct?

I bought my xbox on launch day so I guess its safe to say I have the first
revision.

What modchip should I get if needed and where from?

You can use it without a modchip. You need the modchip if you put a large hard drive in though because the software already on the xbox will only allow you to use a certain amount of the drive without one

The harddrive is locked to the motherboard so no you cant change hard drives without a mod chip.

You could just buy another, what are they £100 [I appreciate you might not have £100], but it'll cost you half that to get it modded and it has so much more to offer
