It's ADSL, comes down your telephone line, nothing to do with satellites. I tested the service a while back and it was very quick and reliable. 12 months free McAfee Internet Security as well.

I don't get this, it was all over the news as being free to existing Sky customers. But I got the letter this morning, and theres a £17/mnth fee, so not exactly free is it
Edited to say, I've just seen the prices on sky, I know I should of read it before posting So the base level is free, not bad at all.
I wonder if you can sell the router on
I see there are no limits on the Max account, but subject to a FUP, I wonder what the details of that are Still pretty decent for £10 a month, looks like my current ISP will be getting the boot.
Further edited to say, that if your area doesn't fall into their network, then you can only get the connect account, which isn't so attractive due to the cap and the activation charge.

Telwest use Netgear routers on some of their packages and you can't re=configure (or re-flash them!)
Solution is to swap the router they give you with your own configurable one. I've already got a netgear router so I should be ok.

Unfortunatley, on 24% coverage for Sky subscribers at the moment. Sky are trying to do somehting about this by snapping up other ISPs etc.
Looks a fairly decent deal - at least the mid and Max package do - especially if you already have SKY.
NTL/Telewest/Virgin as well as Vodafone etc will soon be coming to market so I expect a price war.

Sky are not buying up other ISP's, they're investing millions in more Local Loop Unbundling, once their kit is in your exchange you're good to go. The news of this spend sent their share price tumbling, bad for investors, good for the man on the street.

I got a letter yesterday and that said they hoped to have my exchange upgraded within 12 months. Seems that North Wilts is a bit of a telecoms backwater. No LLU that I can get, nor cable so stuck with plain old ADSL. Guess I had better register just to give Sky the idea that people here would like faster connections
Anyone know if you can get a fixed IP with Sky?

Bit off-topic, but (wishful thinking) is changing ISP like changing mobile phone provider?
i.e. do you get to keep your email address (like transferring a phone number)?
I doubt it is, but that's one of the reasons I stay with BT; I don't want my email address to change...

A good way to always keep the same e-mail address is to purchase a domain with e-mail forwarding.
In your case...
ru@ru.co.uk --> ru@btinternet.co.uk
if you change ISP, just change forwarding
ru@ru.co.uk --> ru@skyisp.com
