Default how to have your website appear at the top of a google search ?

.... or any search engine search for that matter......

A colleague has recently created a website for their business.....

Question is, why does the website NOT appear on the first page of a 'google' search, where as 'competitors' do......

and then..... HOW can this be done either FREE or CHEAP....

MANY thanks !!

Phil

It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication (our company has a dedicated Search Engine Optimisation department with 5 staff).

Start by looking here:

it also depends on how competitive your market is.

What business is he in? Whats the url? We might give you some pointers...

Yes as above done properly it takes time and skill (and money!) trying to do it on the job or quickly is just not going to happen.

www.DesiderataCardiff.co.uk

She's NOT expecting miricales, but just hoping that she could get it listed within the top (so many pages)

Off topic, but just a couple of things I noticed . . .

Site doesn't render very well in Firefox.

Also, on the Beauty Treatments page the menu item for 'Beauty Treatments' needs fixing, its split into 2 hyperlinks, one gives a 404 error.

Oh, and when can you book me in for a bikini line wax

get rid of frames, give all your pages meaningful titles using keywords not your company name (which you might/seem to have done but the frames dont show them...)
title tags on your a href's
alt tags on your imgs
avoid absolute positioning IMHO
what package have you/they used to build it? it is generating a bit of useless stuff...

site is BAD on a Mac safari/firefox

try and get as much good quality content written as you can.

use H1 and h2 tags to highlight keywords/titles

decide what search terms you are targetting ie 'massage cardiff' and incorporate those in the site/tags/text

I think the frame is a 100% frame that masks the url (123-reg ?) so it doesn't show http://s160105000.websitehome.co.uk

Doesnt work correctly on firefox.

Also there is no consistancy on the title logo banner, different sizes, different borders around it depending on which page you are browsing.

I'd set up the home page as a template this keeps all pages looking the same.

I don't know too much about how search engines identify relevant websites, but since when did lack of knowledge about the subject ever stop people posting on Scoobynet?

Seriously though, I suppose the key thing when considering how to get the site found by potential customers is to think about how they might use a search engine.

For example, if I wanted a wax (which I don't!) then I might search for 'waxing' and 'my town', so it would be important to ensure that the geographical areas covered by the business are identified. Maybe staff qualifications might also be important. You need to think what the users of such a business might consider to be the important factors in choosing who they would go to, and how they might choose to use a search engine.

Also. things missing from the website:-
* location e.g. which city/ town, or which district?
* premises - quality of surroundings? ........ or is the service provided at customers' homes?
* staff - who are they? qualifications?
* is the massage for men and women? You could be tapping into unwanted markets if you don't make things clear at the outset!

Hope this helps

Pete

EVERYTHING is helpful !!!!!!

I can't emphasise this enough.....

I am NO web designer and some comments have lost me (tags and things), and my colleague has recently decided to go and have a stab at this...... as she has recently 'qualified' in this area...

She had a college student (friend design it) so undoubtedly this feedback will assist him (and he will probably understand what you are meaning )

I will pass on ALL the comments......

and when she makes her first £1m, I'll tell her it was all down to yourselve and she owes you all a pint

i'll show her the comments tomorrow...

MANY THANKS !!

Phil

She needs to look elsewhere to push a beauty business forward, the internet is not it as far as i'm concerned.

Flyer drops, local press and word of mouth.

Women don't tend to look on the internet for beauty treatments, they wander into their local salon, or the salon which a friend has referred them too and book in there.

Bottom line is don't waste time and money on advertising on the internet, it wont work.

Thanks ALL....

I've shown her you comments and she has taken the onboard.....

I understand she will be giving the feedback to her freind that is producing the website, with the intention of making it better/correct....

... this is a learning curve for the 'web designer' aswell......

EP82... good call.... !!

I'll pass these comments on aswell
